Percentage of VA Children Without Insurance Drops

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A study shows the percentage of Virginia children who lack insurance fell from 7.6 percent in 2008 to 5.9 percent in 2012.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report released Thursday said the decline compared favorably with the national average, which declined from 9.7 percent to 7.5 percent during the same period. The most recent data available is from 2012.

While more children were insured during that period, how the coverage was obtained has changed. More children are under public insurance coverage such as Medicaid as opposed to private insurance.

In 2008, for instance, 17.1 percent of children received public health insurance compared to 22.8 percent in 2012.

The report also found that more children in low-income families saw significant gains in coverage, and minority children saw the greatest gains.
