UVa Track & Field Takes 2nd at Cal-Michigan Tri-Meet
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -
The Virginia men's and women's track and field teams both finished second Saturday at a tri-meet with Cal and Michigan at Lannigan Field.
Uva Track & Field coach Bryan Fetzer said, "It definitely projects us going into the ACC championships in two weeks. To get a competition under our belt against teams that are like caliber that we are going to see once the ACC championships roll around. Our season is real short from the beginning of our season to the ACC championships so getting the athletes back in gear after coming off the indoor season it's very important for us, for momentum sake as we head down to Chapel Hill in two weeks."
The Cavalier women won 7 of the 19 events they were contested in while the UVA men were victorious in six events at the meet.
This marks the second straight year track programs from the nations top public universities squared off against eachother.
Fetzer said, "When you think of two programs like the University of California and Michigan, not matter what sport it is, they're recognized as two of the best athletic programs in the United States. The name recognition alone is great for recruiting. You're bringing in people from the Midwest, you're bringing in a team from the West, the Big Ten the Pac 12 so that experience and that atmosphere will definitely help some of our athletes get to the top of their game."
