Martha Jefferson Monday: What Services are Offered at the Starr Hill Health Center?

The Martha Jefferson Starr Hill Health Center opened at the Jefferson School City Center in early 2013. The goal of the center is to promote health and wellness in the Charlottesville community, and specifically target families and children as a way to teach healthy lessons early.

Reverend Alvin Edwards, a Charlottesville resident, is just one of many patients who visit the center. He comes in weekly for an appointment with Miranda Trent, the nurse practitioner at the center.

“She checks my blood pressure and my weight and if I fill keep track of what I’ve been eating all week, she marks up that list for me too,” noted Edwards.

Edwards started coming to the center because he wanted to take control of his health.

“One of the things I wanted to do was to lose some weight. One specific reason was for my blood pressure. I’m hypertensive and so I’m out to watch my weight.  Working with Miranda, I lost 21 pounds between September and December."

The hope is that Trent can work with families in the downtown Charlottesville area, both children and parents alike, in order to help them make lifestyle changes for the better.

“My goal is really to try to get them to develop a healthy lifestyle, and this is something I want them to do for life, not just a short time,” noted Trent.

Appointments at the Starr Hill Health Center are free of charge, and Edwards says this is a great way to get kids thinking healthy thoughts from the get-go.

“I think from a very young age, as parents, we need to make sure we bring our children here to teach them what’s necessary to have a good life, to have a quality life and making good choices.”
