Charlottesville Man Wins $250K in VA Lottery

Virginia Lottery Press Release

It was a long weekend for Harold Smith. The Charlottesville man had a Virginia Lottery ticket worth $250,000, and he had to wait until Monday morning to redeem it.

“The reality is setting in right now,” he said as he received his check from the Virginia Lottery. “It’s really coming true!”

He bought the Bankroll Doubler Scratcher ticket at Everyday Shop, 3470 Seminole Train in Charlottesville early Saturday morning when he stopped for a cup of coffee. He later scratched it at home and realized it was a top prize winner. A friend told him to sign the ticket and put it in a safe place, so he kept it close by him all weekend.

Bankroll Doubler is one of dozens of Scratcher games available from the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $5 up to $250,000. Mr. Smith is the third player to claim the top prize in the game, meaning there are three unclaimed $250,000 prizes remaining.

Mr. Smith, who works as a delivery driver, said the win comes in handy because he has a daughter coming out of college.
