Workshop in Staunton Focuses on Investing in Local Food

Posted: Updated:
STAUNTON, Va (WVIR) -

People in Staunton are learning about different ways to support local food.

The Staunton Creative Community Fund hosted a workshop Wednesday night about investing locally.

The featured speaker was a woman instrumental in promoting local food in her own North Carolina community. Carol Peppe Hewitt along with others started loaning money to farmers and food businesses with an interest rate of just 2 percent. She shares those stories in her book, “Financing Our Foodshed.”

"You vote with every dollar you spend, so you want to make that a good choice that supports your community and builds resilience, so that 10 years from now there's more local food, not less,” Hewitt said.
