Thursday, the Red Cross is holding a special celebration for the men and women who make a difference every day.
The public is invited to an open house honoring volunteers and staff who conduct disaster responses or life-saving initiatives such as blood drives and CPR courses.
Organizers hope this will encourage others to get involved.
"This is the people's Red Cross. The American Red Cross is just that: it's owned and operated by the American people. We are 97 percent volunteer workforce and we can't do what we do without all the community behind us and with us,” said Bill Brent, executive director of the Central Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The open house is from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the office on Rose Hill Drive.
