Boy Scouts Snowed In On Appalachian Trail Led to Safety

Posted: Updated:
MONTEBELLO, Va. (AP) - An emergency official says at least eight Boy Scouts hiking the Appalachian Trail were rescued after they encountered unexpected snow in Nelson County Sunday.

Nelson County emergency services coordinator Jaime Miller tells The News & Advance that the scouts encountered 3 to 5 inches of snow in Montebello on Sunday after hiking 7 miles from Mount Pleasant in Amherst County.

Miller says the scouts weren't prepared for the snow and decided they needed help. They called Nelson County dispatch.

Police and rescue crews couldn't reach the scouts, so the scouts hiked another three miles to meet them. No one was injured.

Miller didn't know the scouts' troop number or their ages.
