Thanks to two runs in the bottom of the seventh and stellar pitching, the #2 Virginia baseball team edged Virginia Tech 2-1 in game one of a three game series at Davenport Field in Charlottesville Saturday.
Virginia's Nick Howard closed for the 'Hoos in the ninth inning and claimed his seventh save.
UVa Head coach Brian O'Connor said, "He's worn our uniform for three years and he's got a lot of poise. I think that's his seventh or eighth save this year so he's been in that situation a lot...I wasn't concerned. He's done the job for us all year and he's not going to be perfect, nobody is...Proud of him that he buckled down and made the pitches. Even when he gave up the triple, he went two-and-oh on the batter and came back to get him. It shows the quality of his stuff."
Nathan Kirby also had a great showing for the 'Hoos. He recorded his seventh straight quality start, pitching 6 1/3 innings and allowing a run, four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Virginia got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning. Joe McCarthy hit an RBI single to right field to score Mike Papi. After stealing second base, UVa's McCarthy came home on a single off the bat of Nate Irving.
McCarthy said, "A couple of times through the order, that was the third time through the order that we're seeing him so we're starting to get used to him. Started to see patterns in what he was throwing...Going up kind of knowing what to expect and had some guys come through with big hits late in the game."
The series continues at 1 p.m. Saturday at Davenport Field.
