Virginia Counties Near DC Fuel Population Gain

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gains in Virginia counties closest to the nation's capital helped fuel an overall increase in the state's population last year.

Estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau showed Loudoun, Fairfax and Prince William counties combined for more than 33,000 of the increase of 74,000 residents in Virginia from 2012 to 2013.

Chesterfield and Henrico counties also saw healthy increases, while lesser gains were seen in Stafford, Spotsylvania, James City County and Frederick counties.

The number of births in Virginia outpaced deaths by nearly 33,000 from 2012 to 2013. The state also saw gains from migrating residents, including nearly 30,000 international migrations.

Virginia's overall population rose 1 percent last year to nearly 8.3 million.
