Settlement Reached in Wrongful Death Lawsuit against Culpeper Officer

Posted: Updated:

There's been a settlement in a wrongful death suit after a woman was shot multiple times by a Town of Culpeper police officer two years ago. The town's insurance will fork out $300,000.

Patricia Cook, 54, was killed by the officer Daniel Harmon-Wright after the two got into an argument. She was unarmed and sitting in a Jeep Wrangler when it happened.

Prosecutors deemed the shooting was not justified. Harmon-Wright is currently serving a three-year sentence for manslaughter.

"This settlement the family thought was the proper balance between the other side accepting responsibility and them being able to move on,” said prosecuting attorney Kyle McNew.

Harmon-Wright's police cruiser was not properly parked and did not capture the shooting on video.
