Bright Idea Innovation Grant Winners Announced

Posted: Updated:
STAUNTON, Va (WVIR) -

Staunton's Bright Idea Innovation Grants for existing businesses announced its winners Wednesday night.

Newtown Baking came out on top of the competing businesses. Owner William Willett accepted a check for $5,000 to help buy a wood-fired oven.

After eight years in the business of making pastries, he's ready to expand.

"We're going to expand what we're already doing to include pizzas and food in the evenings,” Willett said.

"We liked the idea of supporting an established business in Newtown, which is kind of an area of Staunton that doesn't get the attention that downtown does,” said judge Matt Gaffney.

The American Shakespeare Center was the nonprofit winner. The center will use the money to create an app identifying the user’s Shakespeare character. Then, based on that character, the user will get a personal itinerary for a weekend in Staunton.
