Cville Council, School Board Members Meet to Talk Budget
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -
Charlottesville City Council members met with school board officials Wednesday to talk over some budget issues and remedy a funding gap of hundreds of $262,463.
School Board Vice Chair Amy Laufer says much of the funding they requested is already non-negotiable. The two big items are increases in state-required retirement contributions and teacher salary raises.
"The VRS in particular is non-negotiable, that's a state mandate, and the raises are very important to us because we haven't done that in five years, so we're really hoping this year to not just keep the staff whole but actually give them an increase in pay," Laufer said.
Mayor Satyendra Huja says an agreement will likely involve concessions from both sides. The city will need to find more funding, and schools will need to wait on certain programs.
