An Augusta County man has been found not guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl.
Keith Anderson Mays appeared in Augusta County Circuit Court for trial Wednesday. Mays, 46, was accused of raping a 12-year-old girl in 2000. He wasn't arrested until July of 2013, because police say the victim hadn't reported the rape until then.
The allegations go back to the year 2000, and as no physical evidence exists and no examination happened at the time, jurors said they felt he-said she-said just wasn't enough.
The female involved, who is now in her twenties, said when she was a child she was staying at Mays' home and she woke up to him raping her. The next day, she told her mother and a childhood friend. The mother testified in court she didn't want to report it because she was afraid Mays might take his anger out of his wife and children.
The defense argued there's no way to verify the claims made more than a decade later.
