UVA President Seeks More Diverse Student Body

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - University of Virginia President Teresa A. Sullivan wants a more diverse student body, so she's writing to 80 high school principals in low-income areas of the state.

Sullivan invited the principals to send some of their best students to visit Charlottesville.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports U.Va. also is sending personalized text messages to high-achieving students with financial need. Sullivan told the Kiwanis Club of Richmond on Monday the messages are aimed at guiding the students through the admissions and aid processes.

Sullivan says Richmond-area schools also are being encouraged to nominate more students for the university's Jefferson Scholar program.

U.Va. has been criticized for its lack of student diversity. The nonprofit New America Foundation said last year it's one of the nation's least socioeconomically diverse public schools.
