Albemarle Co. Fire Officials Say One Killed in Free Union Fire
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -
Firefighters rushed to a home along the 3400 block of Millington Road in Free Union just before 11:00 Sunday morning.
Crews say it took about 30 minutes to get the flames under control. They remained on the scene Sunday evening to put out any flare-ups and clean up the debris.
Crews from six different fire departments responded to the blaze.
Firefighters say their trucks couldn't reach the home, so water had to be pumped down the long driveway.
They later found one person dead inside the home.
“I arrived on scene to find a fully involved structure. We were able to extinguish the fire,” said Earlysville Fire Chief Keith Shifflett. “We did have one fatality. At this time the fire is under investigation.”
The victim's name has not been released.
A two mile stretch of Millington Road was closed for more than seven hours while fire crews continued their work on the scene. The road is back open to traffic as of Sunday night.
