Albemarle Co. Supervisors Host Series of Community Meetings

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -

Albemarle County supervisors are trying to open up the lines of communication about a proposed tax hike.

They're hosting a series of community meetings to address questions about the budget and financial issues the county is facing.

Vice-chair Diantha McKeel and supervisor Brad Sheffield held their first community meeting Saturday to talk about the budget and the proposed 4.2 cent tax increase.

“We posted the budget and the tax rate that is the maximum we can pass on April 15, and so we are asking residents to come out and let us know their feelings,” Sheffield said.

He says there may not be much the board can do in order to cover unfunded mandates from Richmond and Washington.

“The majority of that, in my opinion, is based on the fact it's from the state and the federal government that we can't ignore.”

Supervisors say they heard some ideas from the community about where to find savings.

“Hopefully we can bring enough of them together and we can get an agreement on the board,” Sheffield said.

McKeel and Sheffield believe this year is only the beginning of county belt-tightening.

“Once we take care of the budget cycle this year, we really are going to be facing many challenges in years to come,” McKeel said.

“This is not it. We have a challenge coming next year: expansion of our court systems, continued demand from the Virginia retirement system just planning into the future when it comes to the continued capacity of our schools,” Sheffield said.

The Route 29 Western Bypass issue was not discussed at Saturday's community meeting.
