Virginia Football Opens Spring Football Practice to Public with an Upbeat Edge

Posted: Updated:
There's no question the UVa Football team has a new, upbeat ring to it, as the Cavaliers kick off their spring practices with a new tradition.

All of the Cavaliers spell out "Virginia" at the end of stretching, and follow it up with some chanting, chest bumps and high-fives.

Head coach Mike London says this team isn't looking back on its 2-10 finish last season - he says they're only looking forward.

"Every year there's a new team, a new identity that has to be forged," said London. "There's guys on this team that experienced what 2011 felt like, and guys that experienced last season. Our main focus is worrying about what's going on right now, and not what happened in the past. That new focus, that new energy, the new goal of setting standards that will help us be successful on the field, that's what you see."

Suited up in full pads, the Virginia football team opened up its practice to the public on Saturday morning at Scott Stadium.

London says there is still an open competition as to who the starting quarterback will be, but last year's starter, David Watford took his spring break seriously.

While most students escape during spring break, Watford went to George Whitfield's quarterback bootcamp.

"It was an opportunity for him to get some guidance," said London. "Get some teaching, and he took advantage of that. Now the task is to make it transform onto the field here. That was over spring break, we just had a practice after that. We'll see how everything pans out for David but I know he enjoyed it. It was very informative. It remains to be seen what was taught there - on the field here."
