At its March 12 meeting, the Fluvanna County School Board approved a change to the 2013-2014 School Calendar. The Board approved adding May 30 as a school day. Friday, May 23 will no longer be an early dismissal day.
In an effort to add lost instructional time from the school closures on March 17 and 18, the elementary principals are currently reviewing the school day schedule to recover instructional time from activities such as morning announcements, lunch, and recess. Some options discussed include: reading to students during lunch and adding structured activities during the recess period on the playground. By adding an additional 15 minutes to the instructional day from Monday, March 24 until Friday, May 30, Fluvanna will be able to add an additional 11 hours of instructional time.
Because the Middle and High School schedules are different, they meet the minimum clock-hour requirements without schedule modifications.
Should students miss additional instructional time due to early dismissals or delayed openings, other ways to add instructional time will need to be considered.
