A man responsible for a deadly crash in southern Albemarle County is now behind bars. A judge sentenced Jerry Johnson to spend the next year in prison.
It was an emotional afternoon in court for both sides as the judge sentenced Johnson to 10 years in prison, with all but one year suspended.
Johnson, 47, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter last October. He admitted he was responsible for the fatal wreck that killed 26-year-old Andrew Curt Lawhorne.
Lawhorne's family and friends took the stand one by one to talk about the impact of his loss.
Nearly one year ago, Johnson crossed the double line going 80 miles per hour on Irish Road and hit Lawhorne's car head on.
Prosecutors asked for an active sentence of one to three years, while the defense asked for no more than six months.
Once Johnson is released, he will be on good behavior terms for 10 years and will not be allowed to have any contact with the victim's family or friends.
