McAuliffe 2-Year Budget to Include Push for Healthcare Expansion
After a two-week break, state lawmakers are ready to play hardball on healthcare expansion and the state budget. They'll return to Richmond Monday, and a surprise might be in store when they arrive.
In letters between members of the budget conference committee Thursday, Republican Senator Walter Stosch indicated Governor McAuliffe’s version of the state budget, which he will present Monday, will have some big changes in it.
Stosch met with the governor Thursday. His budget is expected to include a big push for healthcare expansion under the Affordable Care Act, the same issue that's left House Republicans and Senate leaders at an impasse since January.
Republicans want to pass a budget without healthcare expansion, and consider the issue separately. Democrats say that's not going to happen. And both sides say they're not budging any time soon.
“We're simply saying take it out. We're more than glad to debate it in a special session after that,” said 66th District Delegate Kirk Cox (R ).
“The issue is not decoupling; the issue is what do we do about the 400,000 Virginians?” said 9th District Senator Donald McEachin (D).
McAuliffe will present his version of the state's two-year budget Monday morning. After that, lawmakers in both houses will have a chance to make changes before sending it back for debate in conference committee.
