As prom season approaches, generous hearts are finding ways to make that night special for all students.

Volunteers for the Cinderella Prom Project of the Shenandoah Valley are gearing up.

Going to the prom can be costly. From the outfit to the shoes and accessories, not everyone has the means to afford it.  But the Cinderella Prom Project, which is held in the Staunton Mall, is making sure everyone can enjoy the memorable night.

From this Saturday through prom season, high-schoolers all across the Shenandoah Valley are welcome to stop by the space and look for a dress or suit. Students interested in taking part need to go to their guidance counselors for an invitation.

The service started up in 2003 with 10 students, and last year more than 100 students benefited.

"We had one girl last year who, her father had cancer, and the family couldn't afford it, so a neighbor brought her in. And we've had kids that need a ride to the prom, and we've had kids that come in here and they want a suit for graduation. It's something that really means a lot to them,” said Debbie Shickel, coordinator of the Cinderella Prom Project.

There is no charge for those who participate, and the process is anonymous. Volunteers are still calling on the community's help for more donations.

Students can begin getting fitted at 10 a.m. Saturday and they're open until 2 p.m.

The Cinderella Prom Project runs through prom season, but volunteers ask that you stop by at least a couple of weeks before your prom, because it can be hard to find the right size at the last minute.

Donations can be dropped off at Augusta Realty Group in Waynesboro, Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate III in Fishersville, 1st Choice Real Estate in Staunton, Bishop Realty in Staunton, or SAW Habitat for Humanity in Staunton.
