Harrisonburg Police Department Press Release

Between mid-February and March 10, 2014 officers from the Harrisonburg Police Department responded to numerous reports of commercial burglaries in the area of the 1700-block of East Market Street. Several of the establishments that have been victimized in these crimes were located in and around the Spotswood Square Shopping Center.

Additionally, there have been reports of commercial burglaries in other areas of the city in this timeframe. It appears that the majority of these burglaries have taken place during the nighttime hours. In these incidents, the offender(s) committed property damage and stole items from inside the businesses.

This series of burglaries appears to be similar in nature to the burglaries that took place in late-December of 2013 when three businesses in the area of the 1600-block of East Market Street were burglarized. The Harrisonburg Police Department believes that the same offender may have carried out all of these offenses given the similarities of the crimes. The suspect has appeared in surveillance recordings to be approximately 5’8 and heavyset and was seen wearing a tan jacket, jeans, tan boots (possibly Timberland), and a black beanie.

These investigations remain active and the Harrisonburg Police Department requests that anyone with information pertaining to these cases contact the Criminal Investigations Division at (540) 437- 2640. Anyone with additional information, who wishes to remain anonymous, is asked to call Crime Solvers at 540-574-5050. Tipsters may also text “HPD” plus the tip to CRIMES (274637).
