Waynesboro City Council Amends Soliciting Ordinance

Posted: Updated:

Waynesboro is addressing soliciting concerns. City Council voted Monday night to amend an ordinance that allows soliciting in the streets.

Panhandling is illegal in Waynesboro but until now, there's been a loophole allowing nonprofits to get a permit from the police chief, Mike Wilhelm, to solicit.

Wilhelm says it's out-of-towners asking for money.

"We were getting large groups - five, 10, 15 people - at the intersection of Rosser and Lew DeWitt. And then we get 15 or 20 calls. They're walking out in traffic, people worried about them getting hit by cars, and of course they're from out of town, so I mean none of the benefit is going to anything that we're aware of in Waynesboro,” he said.

Wilhelm says this won't affect fundraising efforts for schools and rescue agencies.
