The University of Virginia is rebuilding the Berlin Wall.

Four panels of the Berlin Wall - that separated communist East Germany from the free West - arrived by truck Monday. Each concrete slab stands 12 feet high and weighs 6,500 pounds.

“It's a remarkable piece of history, and just think, in the shadow of the Rotunda and the special collections library, which has one of the original copies of the Declaration of Independence, there's this incredible installation that commemorates freedom,” said Jody Kielbasa, vice provost for the arts at UVA.

The panels feature graffiti done by West German artist Dennis Kaun just days before the wall came down in November of 1989.

“It's been such a wonderful gift from Robert and MeiLi Hefner who recently moved to Charlottesville. This is part of their collection and they wanted to share it here with our community,” said Kielbasa.

A crane lifted the pieces into a display which will be enclosed by glass and unveiled in April 11.

Events and speakers are scheduled throughout the year to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the toppling of the wall - including a tie-in with the Virginia Film Festival.
