UVA Professor Tells History of Monacan Native Americans

Posted: Updated:
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -

A University of Virginia professor spoke in Albemarle County Sunday morning on the history of Monacan Native Americans in the area.

Jeffrey Hantman gave a presentation called “Monacans and the Rivanna River” at the Ivy Creek Educational Building.

He has studied and researched the group for more than two decades. Hantman says he wanted to give a summary of the Monacan people through different perspectives, including archaeology and oral history.

“You put all those sources together and what I hope people take away is the deep history of the Monacans,” he said.

Hantman says the Monacan people are now primarily based out of Amherst, Virginia.
