A Charlottesville man is $200,000 richer after winning the top prize of the scratcher “Hit the Jackpot.”

John Blair bought the winning ticket at Tom Thumb food market on Cherry Avenue. The store's manager, Ali Akathar, says Blair is no stranger to the store and business has been good since he won big.

"Yeah he's a regular. I've known him since I was 11 years old so I was very happy for him,” Akathar said.

Blair is the third player to claim the top prize, meaning there are still four unclaimed $200,000 prizes left.

Virginia Lottery Press Release

When John Blair III of Charlottesville realized he had a top prize-winning ticket in his hand, his first words were, “I hit the jackpot!”

That was appropriate, considering the name of the Scratcher game he’d just won is Hit the Jackpot. He’d won the game’s $200,000 top prize.

He bought the winning ticket at Tom Thumb Food Mart, 828 Cherry Avenue in Charlottesville. He took the ticket out to his car in the parking lot and scratched it. When he saw it might be a winner, he took the ticket back in the store where the clerk confirmed that he’d won big.

“I just feel normal,” he said as he claimed his prize at the Lottery’s Prize Zone West in Henrico County. “I don’t get excited.”

The retiree said he intends to save his winnings and pay bills.

Hit the Jackpot is one of dozens of Scratcher games available from the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $5 up to $200,000. Mr. Blair is the third player to claim the top prize in the game, meaning there are four unclaimed $200,000 prizes remaining.
