The Landmark Hotel on Charlottesville’s downtown mall had some siding work done Friday, following the collapse of retaining walls last week.
The retaining walls came crashing down last week thanks to strong gusts of wind - but they are also supposed to keep out trespassers, and it looks like they haven't been doing that either.
Crews replaced the old weather-worn boards Friday with new wood. They bolted the boards to the metal supports of the hotel to keep them from blowing down again. They also had a dumpster to dispose of trash and debris, some of which was left by people trespassing on the property.
One man says it's about time they made some changes.
"Something needed to be done. We've seen fires at night periodically up there and people getting inside the structure. I can't imagine it's safe in there, and I'm just like everyone else in the community who wants the building finished,” said Dave Lemon, who works downtown.
The city contacted hotel owner John Dewberry last week and notified him of the problems with the wall.
People tell us Friday's construction is frustrating, though, because it's only a temporary fix.
