City of Waynesboro Police Department Press Release
The Waynesboro Police Department has arrested a Staunton man and a Waynesboro woman, who are boyfriend and girlfriend, on one count each of misdemeanor drunk driving 37 minutes apart.
On March 7 at approx. 2:10 AM, an officer stopped James Jonathan Nitz, 42 years old, just outside the city limits on W Main Street. Nitz was later arrested for DUI. While a second officer was awaiting a wrecker to tow Nitz’s vehicle, his girlfriend, 46 year old Sara Leach Wood, called the Waynesboro Emergency Operations Center inquiring if she could do anything to help Nitz. She was told no and told not to drive if she had also been drinking.
Approximately ten minutes later at 2:47 AM, Wood drove to where the officer was waiting for the wrecker. When the officer approached Wood, she also showed signs of intoxication and was subsequently arrested for DUI. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Both Nitz and Wood are currently at Middle River Regional Jail until sober enough for bond hearings.
