Attorneys Bring ‘Wills for Heroes’ Effort to Albemarle

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of first responders in Albemarle are filling out their wills at no charge because a group of attorneys are bringing the national "Wills for Heroes" event to the county.

The effort is a way for lawyers to thank Charlottesville, Albemarle County and University of Virginia emergency services workers for all they do. The event is happening Thursday at the Albemarle County Police Department.

Lawyers say it's important to have legal documents in place, especially if you are constantly putting your life on the line. Between now and Saturday, 10 lawyers will help about 120 first responders create a will.

"It’s a great opportunity for the legal community here in Charlottesville to show our appreciation for all our first responders do. We're very fortunate in Charlottesville and Albemarle County with the great responders we have,” said Julie King, a lawyer who’s helping prepare the free wills.

All of the first responders had to take part in a meeting weeks prior to the event to learn how to have control of their assets.

King says these kinds of wills can cost hundreds of dollars, and she's happy for the opportunity to give back to the men and women serving the community.
