A Staunton man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of raping a minor.
A jury found 45-year-old Willard Franklin Campbell Jr. guilty of getting a 12-year-old girl drunk on liquor and raping her. The victim testified that she woke up in the middle of the night last June to Campbell on top of her. A witness corroborated that the victim woke up the next morning on the couch without any pants and with Campbell asleep at her feet.
There is no DNA evidence but a forensic nurse testified that there was trauma.
Campbell's attorney, Mike Little, said, "The fact that she woke up without her pants was probably one of the most damaging facts. The fact that he had been high on meth was probably not a good fact either. And then the SANE report, which is the physical examination report, although they did not have any DNA they did show physical trauma."
Campbell is a registered sex offender. He finished a 13-year sentence in 2008 for making two young children simulate sex.
Though the judge ordered a pre-sentence report, the punishment for rape is a mandatory life sentence.
