Starr Hill Collaborates with Terrapin Beer Co. for Espresso Stout
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -
There's a brand new, one-of-a-kind beer in the works at an Albemarle County brewery. Starr Hill is working with a company out of Athens, Georgia to make a Belgian-style espresso stout.
Starr Hill started its first batch of the "GAVA Joe" collaboration beer on site Tuesday morning. Not only are they teaming up with Terrapin Beer Company, but the drink will also feature espresso from two coffee roasters local to each brewery.
The beer was inspired by the longtime bond between brewmasters Mark Thompson - of Starr Hill - and Spike Buckowski - of Terrapin.
Starr Hill is only planning to produce six batches of the unique stout. Toward the end of the brew, coffee from both Shenandoah Joe's in Charlottesville and Jittery Joe's in Athens will be blended into the beer.
Thompson says it was a natural collaboration because both breweries have a similar love for beer and music.
“They're about the same size, and Spike's a character that I've known for 15 years. Then I'm also really excited to have the coffee collaboration where Shenandoah Joe and Jittery Joe, who both know one another as well. So to bring - it's one of these synergy things where two and two equals five,” said Thompson.
Starr Hill is only brewing 150 barrels of the special beer. GAVA Joe will be available on tap throughout the northeast from Philadelphia down to Georgia and is set to hit the shelves mid-April.
