Woman Charged with Grand Larceny for Theft of Emergency Vehicle
Police say a McGaheysville woman is charged with grand larceny for stealing an SUV from the Grottoes Volunteer Fire Department.
They say 28-year-old Laurel Ansell confessed to taking the vehicle after running out of gas and then getting her gas canister stolen at a 7-Eleven. Ansell then went to the fire station to find help and when no one was there she noticed keys in the vehicle and drove to her father's house.
"It is very unusual that somebody would actually go in to the fire department and steal one of the fire department's vehicles,” said Grottoes Police Chief John Painter.
Footprints led investigators to a home on Valley View Drive. When Ansell would not come out, the SWAT team responded. But Ansell's father says she was asleep.
A neighbor, Gwen Kubosh, said, "I only know what this fellow had said to me before, that he had a daughter, and she has bad habits."
Ansell has been released from Rockingham County Jail. Due to an accident, police say the vehicle might be totaled.
