Snow Buries Shenandoah Valley Once More

Posted: Updated:

Mother Nature dumped another half foot of snow onto the Shenandoah Valley Monday morning, much to the chagrin of people ready to put those shovels away.

Some have hopes - others have doubts - that this is the end of a winter that has just seemed to drag on. With the hint of spring poking out over the weekend, most say they're just ready to move on.

"Ain't no wonder everybody is so sick. With 60-degree weather yesterday, and here we are back in the 20s today,” said Randy Brown, who had Monday off because of the snow.

A familiar mist envelops the region, as inches of snow pile up and ice stubbornly sticks to some roads. Many in the valley face another day away from work, hours out of the classroom for students and the looming risk of treacherous driving conditions.

Brown has a job in construction, so even though this delays his project, he takes it all in stride.

"The roads are covered, but if you take your time and wherever you're going, you don't go too fast, it's not too bad,” he said.

Others like owner of Waynesboro Landscape and Garden Center Lee Quillen, are ready for the snow to be gone.

"Yeah I'm ready for spring, because our focus is landscaping, not pushing snow, so this is a little sideline. We'll be glad when it's over,” he said.

Quillen says drivers have largely steered clear of the roads Monday, making his job easier, but he hopes conditions don't worsen overnight.

"We're going around to the different places we have and taking one swipe at it to get it down in case it does freeze tonight, at least it will clean when it melts in the morning,” Quillen said.

Either way, most people in the valley say enough is enough, but temperatures are expected to drop even lower Monday night.
