Charlottesville Bakery Serves Up King Cakes for Mardi Gras
King Cake from Great Harvest Bread Co.
Staff at a Charlottesville bakery are staying on their toes this week. They are baking dozens of king cakes in honor of the New Orleans' Mardi Gras tradition.
The purple, yellow and green masterpieces made at Great Harvest Bread Co. taste similar to a cinnamon roll. As tradition calls for, there's a small plastic baby in the cake.
"Imagine the biggest, juiciest cinnamon roll you've ever had and it just never ends because it's enormous. They are about nine inches across, all braided up and it's very interesting dough because it's very fluffy,” said Matt Monson, owner of Great Harvest Bread Co.
Monson says last year they sold more than 150 cakes.
