The Westhaven Clinic, with the help of some fourth-year University of Virginia medical students, kicked off its first health fair Tuesday.

People who live in the Westhaven neighborhood and surrounding communities received free screenings, including those for blood pressure, diabetes, and glaucoma. The clinic says it was great to see a diverse crowd take advantage of the services.

"We have a lot of different participants that don't usually come to the clinic. We have a lot of age ranges now. We have our elderly who have made an effort to walk over here that usually don't come out of the house. So, we're getting a lot of socialization as well as the screenings going on,” said Monica Millbrooks-Scott of Westhaven Clinic.

The event was held in honor of Black History Month because organizers say many of the issues they were screening for are prevalent among African-Americans.

The Westhaven Clinic plans to make the health fair an annual event.
