Fundraising Events Raise $450K to Help Fight Breast Cancer at MJH
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -
Martha Jefferson Hospital has some new funds to help treat a deadly disease. The record breaking amount of money comes from Martha’s Market and other fundraising events.
The Women's Committee at Martha Jefferson presented a nearly $450,000 check to the hospital to help fight breast cancer. The money was raised through the "In the Pink" tennis tournament, Martha’s Market, and the squash cancer tournament.
The money provides women with free breast health screenings. It also funds several services - including Marianne's Room, where women undergoing chemotherapy receive a wig for free. A 3D mammogram machine will also be purchased with the money.
"It gives us an extremely detailed picture of the breast without having to do anything invasive so it kind of feels like a regular mammogram but for a select group of women who maybe the mammogram's not quite as affective for them,” said Mary Beth Revak, RN at Martha Jefferson Hospital
Thanks to these annual events, breast cancer detection and treatment programs are available to hundreds of women who need them. The money also pays for programs like massage therapy, yoga and exercise classes for cancer patients.
