Academy Pulls Support of Culpeper Police Seminar

Posted: Updated:

CULPEPER, Va. (AP) - A regional criminal justice academy says it won't offer training credit for a law enforcement counter-terrorism seminar in Culpeper County.

The Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy says in a statement issued Monday that the decision came after it consulted with other academies and law enforcement agencies.

The Council of American-Islamic Relations and the Southern Poverty Law Center say the seminar is anti-Muslim.

The Culpeper County Sheriff's Office is hosting the three-day seminar that begins Tuesday.

Sheriff Scott Jenkins tells The Star-Exponent that the program is still accredited by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Representatives of the Council of American-Islamic Relations and the local Muslim community gave a presentation on Islam on Monday to more than two dozen Culpeper Sheriff's Office staff.
