Staunton Art Studio Hosts Annual All Girls Conference

STAUNTON, Va (WVIR) -
A program that helps girls in the Shenandoah Valley grow into confident young women is getting a boost from a Staunton art studio and celebrating Black History Month in the process.
The studio held an art show and auction Saturday to sponsor the All Girls Conference, an annual event that's free for the teenage girls who attend.
It featured works from Staunton artists who focused on African-American themes.
This art show at the Beverley Street Studio School sponsors the All Girls Conference, an event Makeba Robinson started eight years ago.
“It's an event that we do yearly that aims to build the self-esteem of teenage girls,” she said. “So we have middle and high school girls come in for a day of fun, workshops, keynote speakers, and informational booths.”
Robinson says the Beverley School takes part in the conference every year, so she thought partnering with them for a fundraiser would make for a fun event.
“I think the fun and creative part is what captured my attention, because that's what the conference is all about is being creative and having something fun to do for teenage girls."
Artist Susan Rosen had two pieces featured at the show. She says she's happy to use her talents to support the conference's cause.
“The All Girls conference is a very good thing in encouraging women to become educated.”
Robinson believes incorporating the spirit of Black History Month into the event made it all the more meaningful.
“I normally try to tag a fundraising event on to something that's already going on,” Robinson said. “This event was in honor of Black History Month. All of the art here is either done by African-American artists, or features African-American themes.”
This was the first art show fundraiser for the conference.
Aside from the funds raised today, the Staunton Parks and Recreation Department and the DuPont Community Credit Union help sponsor the conference.
