Brandon Downes Homers 'Hoos Past ECU in Home Opener

UVa junior outfielder Brandon Downes hit two solo home runs including the game-winner in the sixth inning to give Virginia a 3-2 win over East Carolina in its home opener.

Downes was the only Cavalier player with multiple hits.   The 'Hoos managed just six hits total.

UVa left-handed pitcher Nathan Kirby gave up just two runs and four hits in 6.1 innings of work improving to 2-0 on the season.

Mike Papi drove in Virginia's other run on an RBI double in the 3rd inning which tied the game at 2.

Virginia improves to 4-1 on the season and will host ECU for game two of the series Saturday at 1 o'clock.
