Money Set Aside for Western Bypass to be Reallocated
A lot of money had already been allocated to fund the construction of the Route 29 Western Bypass - but now that Albemarle supervisors pulled their support from the project Wednesday night, what happens to the money?
The answer is complicated. The state could take money meant for the bypass and put it into other projects around Virginia. That means it could impact other transportation projects in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
Depending on the state's decision, that could pull money from projects listed in the Places 29 Master Plan - like extending Berkmar Drive or widening Route 29.
Charlottesville City Councilor Kristin Szakos says the city's construction projects should be safe. Those include the Belmont Bridge renovations and the building of the Best Buy ramp.
However, there are two projects that would involve cooperation between the city and Albemarle County that could take hits due to county involvement - including the extension to Hillsdale Drive and a new overpass at Hydraulic Road.
Szakos says the city and county will bring these issues up for discussion at the next Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting.
