Congressman Robert Hurt paid a visit to the Miller School Thursday to talk politics with some rising stars.

Hurt spoke with a class of Advanced Placement (AP) government students. He introduced them to the Fifth District and the importance of being involved in their government when they reach voting age.

The student's teacher, Hugh Meagher, says this is a great addition to what they are already learning in class. The students prepared questions for Hurt on topics ranging from immigration to water pollution.

Hurt says meeting the country's next generation helps him realize the importance of his position.

"The big issues for me are jobs, so when these young people get through their education, what jobs will be available? What opportunities will be available for them? And obviously the policies that are enacted in Washington have everything to do with that opportunity,” said Hurt.

Hurt says part of getting students involved in the civic process is being accessible as a lawmaker.

Hurt will also be speaking Thursday night at the American legion in Keswick to honor an Albemarle County World War II veteran.
