Virginia Ranks 3rd in U.S. for 'Green' Buildings

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia is among the top states in the nation when it comes to "green" buildings.

The U.S. Green Building Council says its annual ranking of the top 10 states puts Virginia at the No. 3 spot in terms of sustainable building design, construction and operation.

Through 2013, Virginia certified 160 green projects representing nearly 17 million square feet of real estate. The council cited a few notable projects, including the federal courthouse in Richmond, the Warren County Public Safety Building in Front Royal, the Masons Cove Elementary School in Roanoke and the Great Neck Middle School in Virginia Beach.

The top two states were Illinois at No. 1 and Maryland at No. 2.
