The Valley Children's Center in Staunton is accredited and celebrated the accomplishment Tuesday with an open house.
The center interviews children who may have been injured or physically assaulted. The interviews take place in a kid-friendly environment and are recorded. Then, attorneys or law enforcement officers act accordingly.
Executive director Dennis Baugh says accreditation reassures that they follow national standards.
"It's not just something that was just dreamed up, and so we do have a strict way of doing our interviews,” Baugh said. “We have a way of working with our other agencies in the community we call multi-disciplinary teams. So I think it just shows the community we want to be professional and we're acting that way when we work with children."
The center saw 163 cases last year with more than half of the kids disclosing information.
