Monticello Launches Three New Online Programs

Monticello Monticello
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -

With snow keeping many indoors this President's Day weekend, Monticello had to reschedule two speakers they planned to highlight.

But Monday, they'll be launching three new programs that you can enjoy right from your computer at home.

The release is the culmination of years of work in collaboration with the University of Virginia and teachers around the world.

The programs are geared towards three different age groups, with the goal of making Jefferson's legacy accessible to all.

Monticello education director Linnea Grim says the largest of three new web-based programs started as an exhibit called “The Sea of Liberty.”

“It pulls together a tremendous amount of primary source documents for teachers to be using in their classrooms,” Grim said.

The second program is a massive open online course in collaboration with UVA featuring Jefferson professor Peter Onuf.

“I think it's a great thing to make this available to people who are interested in Jefferson, interested in the questions that Jefferson engaged with, and interested in the way we live now,” Onuf said.

He says his work on the lecture series will very likely be his last.

“This for me is a wonderful culmination to my own career and opportunity to talk a little bit more and maybe for the last time to a lot of people about some of the things that I really care about.”

The third program is a free app, aimed at children ages 3-7. It's designed to help users learn to read while exploring a virtual Monticello.

Grim says they couldn't have selected a better release date for the online programs, with the weather preventing some visitors from making it to Jefferson's mountaintop home.

“Especially on days like this where the weather isn't so great or travel plans are disrupted, we know that there are people that are interested in learning about Jefferson,” she said. “These online initiatives are going to give us that chance to really reach out to people.”

All those online programs go live Monday. If you would like to try them out yourself, click here.
