NELSON COUNTY -

Skiers and snowboarders are packing the slopes at Wintergreen to take advantage of the fresh packed powder from the biggest snowfall of the season and one of the biggest in years.

The Nelson County resort is still tallying up its numbers for Saturday, but it expects this extended holiday weekend is welcoming the biggest crowd of the season.

With nearly two feet of fresh snowfall over the last few days, skiers and snowboarders at Wintergreen say the slopes couldn't be better.

“Conditions are great, there's a fresh layer of powder from the snow, and it's been really nice throughout the day,” said snowboarder Matt Baugh.

Wintergreen says Saturday may end up being the resort's biggest day of the season.

Many people had already booked a trip to the mountain for the extended President's Day weekend and this week's snow just attracted more visitors.

“[I’ve] been skiing at wintergreen for about 20 years,” said Maureen McNeil. “I'm from Fredericksburg, Virginia and it was probably the best conditions today I've seen in Virginia in probably 10 years.”

All of the extra people did create crowded conditions.

“I don't like skiing on the weekends because of the crowds, but you know, you got to do what you've got to do if you want to ski,” said Scott Phillips.

“It's been really crowded,” Baugh said. “I guess people are taking advantage of the good conditions.”

If you didn't make it out this weekend, not to worry. Wintergreen says a snowfall like this may help keep the slopes open longer this season.

That's welcome news to winter sports enthusiasts.

While above freezing temps helped melt some of the snow in the lower elevations, it was close to 20 degrees colder on top of the mountain.

Wintergreen even added three inches of fresh snowfall overnight.
