The #1 UVa baseball team rebounded from a loss to Kentucky in its season opener, as the Cavaliers beat VMI 12-0 Saturday in Wilmington, NC.

Sophomore Nathan Kirby pitched six shutout innings for UVa, allowing just four hits while striking out seven.

"Oh, it felt great," says Kirby.  "We just turned the page, forgot about everything, and got out and go our business done, and played well as a team."

Head coach Brian O'Connor says, "Nathan Kirby has really pitched well this fall and in the preseason for us.  He is obviously very talented.  He's a very good lefthanded pitcher, and it was great to see him go out there and show some really good poise, and make some good pitches, and not beat himself."

Brandon Downes had two hits and three RBI, while Mike Papi scored three times.

The Cavaliers conclude their weekend against the tournament's host school, UNC Wilmington, at 2 p.m. Sunday.
