House Committee Halts Repeal of Ultrasound Law

A controversial law requiring women seeking abortions in Virginia to undergo an ultrasound will stay on the books.

A bill to repeal that law failed to advance Friday afternoon in a Republican-controlled House committee. It passed the Senate earlier this week with a tie-breaking vote.

Republicans say ultrasounds are routinely used when seeking to terminate a pregnancy, but Democratic critics say the law puts the government between a woman and her doctor.
