VA Ag Officials Urge Farmers to Prepare for Storm

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia farmers are being urged to prepare for the latest winter storm.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumers Services says preparations can include turning off propane supplies at tanks, providing shelter for livestock and equipment and pruning or removing trees that could fall on power lines.

Farmers also are advised to buy or rent generators, and store water and feed for livestock and people.

The department says tobacco farms, nursery operations, dairies and hog and poultry operations are vulnerable if there is a lengthy power outage.

Winter storm warnings and watches are in effect across Virginia from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday night. The National Weather Service says some areas could receive up to a foot of snow.
