FLUVANNA COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -

A volunteer program has expanded into Fluvanna County this school year and is now in need of more volunteers.

JABA'S Friends in Schools Helping, or FISH Program, matches volunteers with students in area schools. The FISH program has been in Charlottesville and Albemarle County for decades. Now about 25 people are volunteering through FISH in Fluvanna County elementary and middle schools.

Wanda Ross became a volunteer at Central Elementary School after relocating to the area from Philadelphia.

"I wanted to do something that would be giving back and I love children," she said.

She plays games, practices words, and reads with the kids.

"I know I get a lot out of it, I enjoy it. It just gives me a lot of pleasure, just in seeing them grow," Ross said.

She said the children value the 30 minutes of individual attention.

"It's just so worth it and all of the kids can just use the extra one on one and just knowing that they're all important, they're all special," she said.

Now FISH organizers are looking for more volunteers willing to spend some time with children like Ross. Even though the school year is well underway, it's not too late to sign up. There's also a possibility of volunteering through FISH in Fluvanna County over the summer.

Right now the program mostly needs people who can help students with reading and math, particularly anyone willing to work in the morning. But organizers say they'll work around each volunteer's schedule and interests.

There is also a need for people to take leadership roles to help organize and facilitate the program to keep it running and even expanding in the future.

FISH organizers plan to expand the program to Greene County next school year. The expansion to the counties is through the 3-year AmeriCorps VISTA grant. FISH organizers say with enough resources, one day they hope to expand the program to Nelson County as well.
