Meeting Held for Parents after Teacher Arrested on Child Porn Charges

Posted: Updated:

An award-winning Charlottesville teacher is caught up in the middle of a federal child pornography investigation.

Corey Schock was a popular teacher at Venable Elementary School but now he's behind bars, leaving a community with more questions than answers. School administrators spent Tuesday sorting through the situation but Tuesday night, an emotional meeting with parents focused on the impact this may have on students.

"I was stunned, completely and totally stunned,” said parent Jennifer Slaughter, whose children used to be students of Schock’s.

Forty-three-year-old Schock, who taught fourth grade at Venable, is facing two charges of possessing child pornography and one count of soliciting child porn.

“We are saddened by this turn of events but our first priority will be our students, teachers and community,” said Beth Cheuk, spokesperson for Charlottesville City Schools.

Tuesday night, administrators, counselors and police met with parents to discuss the sensitive issue. Many parents wanted to know how to tell their children, as others looked for reassurance that Schock never had contact with their children in the last seven years he's been at the school.

“At this point there is no information linking any connection to students at Venable,” Cheuk said.

Some people at the meeting just wanted to make it known that Schock's family is still part of their community.

Detectives searched Schock's Charlottesville home and arrested him Monday on a federal warrant. According to the U.S. attorney's office, the arrest stems from an investigation that started in Northern Virginia in December and led them to Schock.

A judge denied Schock bond Tuesday, so he will remain behind bars for now.

As far as schools are concerned, administrators say they plan to take the situation one day at a time.
